Owls usually are the largest sky predator in certain areas but a hungry hawk can do some damage with it's talons even if it can't pick up it's prey.
Owls are also out before the sun goes down and for at least an hour or more after it comes up so stay close to the little guy.
Many here have heard way too many horror stories about Yorkies and other pets being horribly mangled by birds and other animals of prey. If anyone has suspected such a thing could happen they would never have let their little ones out.
I had a huge owl fly over my head and land on a branch just a few yards in front of me one sunny morning. I never knew such huge birds existed until I saw that guy! He gave me the definite impression that he was letting me know that he was in charge around here and that any little animals I might want to let outside would be his mid morning snack!
