Mine started with a short that killed the hard drive. I paid $100 for a new hard drive and installed it myself. Then the "starter" for the whole computer died, so it would make a whirring sound, but never actually start. I was told it would be at least $150 to fix that. At that point, I decided just to buy a new computer.
I bought my current Toshiba laptop at Best Buy for $399 a few months ago. It has the latest Pentium processor and is fast and strong enough for me to have multiple browsers open, and Photoshop, Paint Shop, and Adobe Illustrator running all at once. Not a bit of hesitation.
