 Belly Band - Do i give him a chance?

Brew is 6 1/2 months old and had started marking right around 6 months. almost always outside, but there have been a few times where he has picked up one of our guest's dogs smells inside and has marked.
We are travelling to the in-laws house this weekend for a post-Christmas visit, and i'm wondering about belly bands. i plan to get one for him so that we don't have any embarassing marking accidents. There will be a Male s**t-zu around.
my question is: do you think we should give him a chance to roam around without the belly band and use it as a correction if he does mark? or should i just put it on him from the get go.
I would prefer to have him understand why i'm putting the belt on, but because this isn't a potty accident it's just his instincts setting in i'm unsure. he is to be neutered the following weekend. so there isn't a real life lesson to be learned.
