Thanks for all the replies! I called the people I got Jack from and he suggested wrapping a hot water bottle in a towel and placing it in his crate. WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! He still cries for one or two minutes but settles down quite quickly. I stuck my finger in the crate and softly told him "shhhhh". He liked that too and went right to sleep. he slept from 11:15pm last night all the way through until 6:00 this morning

I did cover it with a blanket on the top and sides just to keep any draft away from him but we take the blanket off and leave the door open during the day. today he went in all by himself and was playing with a toy for a few minutes. I also put a treat in for him so he will see that its ok to be in there.
Tonight was the first night we left him all alone in his crate for about three hours while we went out. He was really whining when i walked up to the front door. Im sure he will get used to it. he is a really good boy.
P.S. its not a enclosed crate...its actually a cage. I dont like the crates that they cant even see out of except for the doors. I wouldnt want to be in there so we got him the cage.
