I understand how you feel. Most of my family is back in Chicago and it is too hard to travel with kids or dogs. I will be having a quiet Christmas with dad and the dogs in Virginia.
Set up video conference on your computer and do live chats with your family.
Before I had the doggies, I made gingerbread houses and cookies. Definitely work on those new traditions.
