Cut your losses on this one. The dog is now safe. Pretend you know nothing if she is looking for the dog. Just tell her "maybe it is for the best especially since you have told me you can't afford the dog.". If she gets another one I would take pictures of observed abuse and document and then call the authorities with each incident.
