It's kind of like the deal at Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan. There is one huge tree placed on the ellipse on the south side of the White House, outside the gated compound, and 50 smaller trees circle it representing the 50 US states. The individual states decorate their tree. It's tradition for the President and First Family to host a ceremony lighting the tree, singing carols with school groups and celebs.
