I think if the five year old is use to dogs, maybe has one of her own and has been taught how to take care of them and is gentle, then that would be ok. I have a five year old granddaughter (turned five last month) that I would not hesitate to leave any of mine in her house. She's a wonderful little 20 year old in a five year old body.
