I've had three Maltese, one male and two females, and they were all pretty laid back, not a dominant bone in their bodies. I did have one at the same time as two Yorkies, and she was very content to let the bossy Yorkies take charge. I really think either male or female would do fine, as long as you get one with the typical, laid-back temperament.
