NEW YORK (AP) _ A Yorkshire terrier dog that was a gift to a cancer-stricken teenager has been returned to her following a confidential settlement with a woman who had been caring for the pooch and was reluctant to give him up, a lawyer in the case revealed Friday.
Michele Klein, 15, reclaimed 4-year-old Hershe from Gayle Fisher Worth, the girlfriend of the now-imprisoned man who gave the girl the pup. Worth relinquished the dog Tuesday after previously declaring she would keep him.
Michele's father, attorney Martin Klein, had sued Worth last week in Manhattan's state Supreme Court to get the dog back. Klein said imprisoned contractor and former friend Ted Kohl gave the purebred Yorkie to Michele on her 11th birthday.
Court papers said Kohl was taking care of Hershe while the Klein family was on vacation in London. After Kohl was sentenced and sent off to prison Nov. 28, he left the dog in Worth's care. She subsequently refused to return him.
Klein's $6 million lawsuit said his daughter had been diagnosed with "malignant melanoma" and Hershe "gave her great comfort and assisted in her recovery efforts." The dog's absence was adding stress to the girl's body, court papers said.
Klein's lawyer, Hayley Greenberg, said Friday, "The only thing we can say is that our client has the dog now." She added that there would be no statement from the family.
