Well start by researching kennel clubs. The three main ones that I know are AKC, UKC, CanKC (canadian kennel club) decide which you are most interested in and start attending events sanctioned by them and shows being held by them. Doing "fun" shows is a good way to get familiar with the ring and the process of getting ready for a show and all the time, money, commitment it takes.

I would find a show quality breeder in your area to connect with who is willing to mentor you, teach you the ins and outs, co own a show dog, and possibly let you handle her/his dogs eventually when they fee you are ready. The show breeders I know will co-own the dog with the buyer until the dog has titled or earns so many points... Not sure if you pay the price for the dog upfront or once the co ownership is dropped?? I could write more but I am on my iPod and getting sore thumbs haha!
