Jealousy is one of the great motivators in dog behavior. When Ms Daisy wants up on my lap, Gatsby gets very jealous, and turns into a barking machine if he is in the room and not totally zonked for the evening. So then I usually give in and put her down, at which point she always growls at Gatsby because she knows that his fussing is why she can't nap on my lap, which is her usual preference. They are in a constant state of competion, although they do like each other and play nicely together most of the time. The competative dynamic is always there (unless its nap time, that is)
