Funny story here regarding this issue...
In our puppy class we had no small pups, all large ones. So I decided to socialize my baby with another small breed. I asked my hairdresser (we are good friends) if she would come over with her 10lb female Pom (she is spayed). It was the longest hour and a half. Now at this point Brutus wasn't fixed but had never humped. He was a humping machine - he warmed right up to her and started going at it. He humped her head, side, the air - really anything around her. After that I reseached and found that they will hump to show who is boss. The whole situation was chaotic, as we were constantly trying to keep them apart.
