If he is straining to eliminate, then there is a problem. If the "slime" is mucous, I believe that means an intestinal irritation that needs to be addressed. Or it could be the fluid from the anal glands, or it could just be softer poop.

Mucous or blood means time for the vet. Blood can be bright red (lower intestine) or very dark (upper intestine/stomach).

Any diet changes recently?
