Riley has full run of the bedroom at about 9 months old....
I would keep the bedroom door open, but had a plastic baby gate
in the doorway. He did so well, that I gave him full run of
the whole place about a month later.
He is soooooooooooooooooooo GOOD!
I keep a doggie litter box in the corner with peepee pads in it, so if
he HAS to go, he uses it. Never had any problems!!
