We also free feed. We keep food and water available in our LeBistro feeders all the time. We had the same problem with vomiting bile near morning with Ginger and since keeping the food down all the time we don't have that problem anymore. She actually goes to the kitchen and eats a little in the middle of the night now. Our dogs are used to this and seem to eat when they need to.
