I started by setting out just two toys, a ball and a fish. And told her to "get the fish", when she did I praised her and if she picked up the ball, I said NO, "get the fish". Once she knew the fish, I asked for the ball (which I think she pretty much knew already from playing fetch with the ball). When she had those two down I added another toy and repeated the process, then another toy, then another. Now she knows most of her toys by name.
