We had the exact same situation in our first home. We pulled up the carpet and had the hardwood re finished. It was gorgeous afterwards, but oh what a messy process! But I think it was well worth it. However, we did not have a pet at the time. So I have no experience with that, but on the design factor, I like real hardwood the best.
