trained housedogs were shown to be able to detect early-stage lung and breast cancer by simply smelling breath samples of the patients. to indicate the patients with cancer, the dogs learned to sit/lie down in front of cancer patient samples and to ignore negative control samples through method of food reward. this was a double-blind experiment so neither dog nor researcher knew what sample was what during testing. the dogs were found to have successfully identify the samples 90% of the time.
this can be explained by the fact that cancer cells release different molecules from those of their healthy counterparts and that difference may be perceived by the dog's highly sensitive olfactory system.
