As far as not wanting to spend thousands of dollars, that is the responsibility in the decision you made when you decided to get a dog. Have you thought about surrendering him to a rescue, if you don't want to cover vet bills? It sounds like he has been suffering for awhile and he needs help.

Just a thought, but if you were that sick, I hope you would be at the hospital, regardless of the price tag.
