Playing in the grass and rubbing up against the furniture and layng on fabric can prevent a good coat from growing to the floor. I keep my babies in light oil to protect their coats and then wrap their coats to protect it once it reaches the floor, as well as it allows them to play and all. I also use a wrapping jacket at times too and booties (if they scratch). Then once their coat get about an inch pass the floor I keep it trimmed. But just putting a conditioner in their coat will not make it grow faster or stop it from breaking off on fabrics. It will help to keep it from matting somewhat and will give a shine to the coat.

P.S. Trimming a 5 month old puppy will not make the coat fuller or healthier. I have known groomers to use trimmers on a pup that had mats. I never touch the coat hair till it is pass the floor. I only trim the ear tips and the underneath (bellie) area on a pup.
