That had to be scary, so sorry to hear. I am one of those that would never leave them in the car unattended, especially when traveling to a rest stop in places unknown, and i would never ever ask a stranger to watch them for one second, its a sad state this world is in, 30 years ago may be a different story.
I would always use a gas station with outdoor doors to the restrooms and take them in in a carrier or an enclosed doggy stroller, if the rest stops don't allow it. A lot of doggy strollers now a days look just like a baby stroller and with the top down and enclosed, you cant erven tell its doggies in there unless thye start "talking", lol
