I have a huge yard. When I am going to be working in one area, I take my lil girl out with me, too, but I use a 25-foot leash and attach her to a tree. She's very contented. I learned a long time ago that you can sometimes trust them, but there is always going to be something that will cause them to run. Sometimes that something is just the urge to run. Other times it is a squirrel, a rabbit, or whatever. You just never know.
