I find this depends on the bitch. I have seen all types. I have one bitch who will CARRY her pups and place in my lap on the sofa....so she can resume her position in bed with her human daddy...between 4 and 5 weeks she is DONE. She literally gives them to me to finish feeding and clean butts! She will also throw up partly digested food to feed the pups...in order to divert their attention away from nursing and get them to EAT. She doesn't get mom of the year award! But she does her job as she sees fit.
Another Yorkie gal just recently completed her duty....she slept with her baby for 4 1/2 months...she demanded to sleep with him up until the day he left. Literally threw barking fits to get into his pen...there was no peace.
And another gal. Well she doesn't want to sleep with them past 6 or 7 weeks...but she nurses and cleans their butts for MONTHS. LOL My tiny female was highly insulted that mom was still flipping her over at one year of age...to clean her tush and butt! LOL
They are all different.
