Yes, it's ridiculous that dogs are "property", but IMO elevating them to family in the court system is a big mistake. Costs will sky rocket, then nobody is going to be able to take care of them, and then shelters will be even fuller, and more will be euthanized. I was shocked to find out how much my vet pays for insurance yearly vs. how much one of her human doctors pays. There is no way pet owners are going to want to eat these costs.
I also think it's weird that you can't sue in the state of Texas if your sibling or whatev is killed.
That doesn't mean I think animals should be subject to abuse and such, but I don't think it's a good precedent. |
I am not one who really agrees with all the suing that goes on I just don't agree that it puts the animals OVER us and I fully disagree that animals are treated as property as I truly feel that it is that thinking that allows all of the mistreatment of animals to continue. I swear I may slap the next person to stand in front of me and say "it's just an animal, get over it" LOL Not really...maybe.
I just wish that the laws concerning the treatment of animals would be far harsher. Not sure really that any of that really concerns this particular case though, I am just so fed up recently with all I see and hear that goes on.
I totally agree, that dog should never have been there in the first place but accidents do happen. Those fines are not usually that high and if in fact their dog is one who tends to escape then maybe they shoulda thought about keeping a fund to bail him out before.
