I guess i don't think animals should be as equal to humans either, it's just that if someone was negligent towards ANYTHING i own especially my pets I would probably want the option to sue for more than just the "value of the possession" because there is no real money value for the loss of a family pet. it's hard to bring lawsuits on something that is not tangible. it's not like it's a 150 ipod that i want money back for, it's a pet that you can't replace. or a child you can't replace. no matter what i agree that it's greedy to want tons of money for a loss, but if i were upset about loosing a member of my family dog or human i would probably want justice served to the person who screwed up and killed them. accidents are one thing, but to put down a dog "my mistake" is a big accident that should have NEVER happened.

adding: though it IS the responsibility of the owners to keep their pets contained and to have the funds to get them out of doggie jail if they get stuck in there.
