One thing....you have to be positive and use positive re-enforcement! Like a child, some little furbabies do things just to spite you (or it seems like it sometimes). --so, you need to be good to them and they will be good to you! Praise, Praise, Praise - they love it and you will be amazed at the outcome!
Use a crate or pen....something temporary until the little baby gets use to its surroundings and you. I can't tell you how I got my little guy trained, but he started on pee pads and now he goes outside too, but pee pads are still needed for those late night urges and when it is too cold/rainy outside.
As for pooping....there was a post recently about that.....talking about how some won't go pee and poop in the same area.....You might want to read through that and see if you can find anything.
My little guy seems to keep turning around (how dogs do) and miss his pad when trying to poop....But we have never found poop anywhere other than by his pad. He is good about going outside to poop and normally goes to the same two spots in the yard.
Good Luck!
