For eye boogers, eye wash is not necessary, nor would it be effective or advisable. There are many potential causes for eye drainage. Pinpointing the cause is the only way to determine the solution.
I used to believe in using sterile saline solution for the eyes when necessary (i.e. a foreign body in the eye). After Max had corneal ulcers, I decided the preservative in the saline was irritating his eyes. Plus, the solution does not remain sterile once the bottle is open. I use plain water now. Room temperature.
