Cry you can teach an old dog (owner) new tricks...or lessons...

6 weeks ago I received a 13 1/2 year old Yorkie into my 4 member pack. The pack consist of 3 males and 2 females. All males are neutered and one female is spayed. I thought all was going well with the pack and felt comfortable to leave our senior member outside his pin while I was away. Well tragedy struck. We arrived home to find him near death and had been mauled by the 6 year old, larger male in the pack. We have had a tough 4 days, since Saturday night last. With prayer, excellent emergency vetrinarian care and Intensive care nursing at home (I'm a RN), it appears that he is recovering dramatically well. We will be checking his renal function again Friday since he was in shock and suffering from myoglobinuremia and elevated BUN immediatley post injury. He is eating, drinking and toileting normally now. He began to walk more easliy today. Gets his surture out Tuesday. I hope to give him several more safe happy years. Long story short, If your gut tells you to seperate the elders from the pack while your away, DO IT!

I have read about this with Yorkie packs, but never dreamed it would happen to me. I have loved 8 adult Yorkies and 13 puppies through the years. I got too comfortable!
