Has he been lifting his leg or just sqatting to wee? Some dogs take longer before they lift, some never do, and some do it early. Can it be maybe he has learned how to do this and is missing the pad for that reason? Also this might be the reason for more barking. It might be he's growing up? Maybe a female in your vicinity in heat? Just a thought.
