I live in Florida too but haven't used any flea protection on my dog for years. I bathe him in lavendar shampoo.
Like you I prefer not to use Advantix, Frontline etc. I have been spraying them with a Flea and Tick spray from a local herbal store. The spray has lavender, yarrow, neem and others (her blend) of essential oils/fragrances. It's been working and the gang smell nice. If you want to try something cedar look at the Cedarcide website. It's a natural substance. It was supposed to have been developed for the troops in the first desert war in the 1990's. It does work quick and it knocks down a lot of other insects i.e. ants, bees, so on. Make sure you read the MSDS if there are any questions before you want to try it.
