This is what I did, with the same exact problem. I have a cat the comes and goes in the night, so I got a gate ( actually a expandable window screen and I slide it open to fit the door) So, the cat can jump in and out.. no problem,and Bailey is NOT a jumper, so In the night when he jumps down, before he would go out in other rooms and whine, and I wouldn't hear him and he'd just find a spot and go,, Now he just sits at the gate and whines and I hear him,and I get up and we go out.
He doesn't even wake up anymore he sleeps throught the night, I keep the gate up,cause I know with the cat coming and going, It would be ON, with them chasing each other, this way we ALL THREE get a good nights sleep.
