I also think its up to the groomer. I learned something new as a grooming assistant at my past job when I worked with different groomers.
We had dogs who went nuts with the owner, who was very uptight (he was overworked, stressed out). Some were classified even as dangerous, by him.
Then those same dogs did perfectly with another groomer who put out a very soothing calm vibe. Dogs totally pick up on your attitude.
I think its important to find a groomer who doesnt get uptight if a dog wiggles too much and tries to calm them down by talking to them. A bad groomer can totally make the difference on how your dog acts. Make their first grooming experiences positive!
I also think its important not to force everything on to a dog, but let them learn that its not going to hurt, by being patient and positive. I just dont think its my role to assert my dominance on a dog I barely know, atleast thats my philosophy at work.
My Yorkie as a puppy wouldnt hold still for brushings or stand up. But when she was a year 1/2, she would come running to me when I brought the supplies out. She falls asleep now
I started out by touching everything.. touch her toes, her nails, her rear end, her tail, her face, her mouth. I did this every day. Then I just introduced everything veeeerryy slowly, with lots of praise, treats, and a calm attitude. I also did it when she was sleepy
Ive also heard of using a baby brush (very soft), and just getting them used to having something brushed over their body first. Then get them used to an actual brush when they are okay with that.
I think its great that you want your doggie to be well behaved. More pet owners should think that way
