About 12 years ago my mom found a pomerian running in the street while driving home from a store. She managed to caught it after 2 hrs of chasing it. No one in the neighboorhood she caught the dog knew who it belonged to. The dog was filthy, no tags, no tattoo, and no microchip and skinny. She called all the shelters, rescues, and vets offices in a 20 mile radius of where she found the dog and had him vetted and vaccines to be safe. The dog was great with humans but hated other dogs. He would attack our poor bichon. So us keeping him was not an option. So for 2 months she keep following up with the shelters, etc. to find out if anyone called looking for the dog. During this time a few people inquired about lost dogs around the size of him but it was never his owner. My mom gave the dog to a family friend after 2 months of searching for the owner. ALso during this time she placed found ads in several papers and posters. Those that responded to the ads and posters could not produce records, pics, info., etc. on the dog.
A week later a woman called wanting her dog back. She was nuts. She alleged we stole the dog. One of the shelters gave her our phone number. She said the dog was a show dog. Legally she did not have right to the dog and did not get it back. According to the shelter she had only called them that day. My mom had to change our phone number to get rid of her.
The shelter told my mom the dog would have been placed for adoption after 5 days if not claimed by the owner and humanely killed if not claimed or adopted after 14 days. The fact my mom looked for the owner for 2 months was above and beyond. |
