Won't he be leaving for college in 4 (or less) years? While there's a rare exception, most kids don't actually care for or provide for the dog, the parent does. I've always told my kids they get to share/enjoy whatever dog I have and when they have they own homes they can obviously get whatever they want.
However...if what he wants is also what you want for you.....then you're slightly less insane
