Difficult to say much on this until all appeals are exhausted and there is a verdict and award granted.

So many variables....Was the dog wearing collar/tags? The dog clearly wasn't microchipped. They found the dog at the shelter when? And left it there until the following Monday so it could be microchipped? I don't understand this. If I found my lost dog, I wouldn't be leaving anywhere over what I'll infer from the article would be a weekend. Very strange. A large dog that's lived through a marriage, and the birth of a few children, is obviously up there in age. I'd think the life expectancy of the dog would come into play in the award of financial compensation.

As with most sad situations with dogs, at the crux of it is the failure of people to maintain control over their pet. That dog ended up at the shelter because it was running loose...for whatever reason. That was a failure on the part of the owner to maintain control of their dog. Had that same dog while running loose bit another dog or person, we'd be having a whole different discussion.

It will be interesting to see how this case plays out in the courts.
