In my opinion, male or female is not an issue. If you have your little guy neutered, they do not seem to 'mark' as much. If you don't encourage them to bark when they are tiny and their little bark is so adorable, they do not seem to grow to be yappers. I let mine bark at the front door, birds and such; then after a little I just tell them "ok, enough", and they run back to me and settle down.
