I like your idea of using a cue word like No, pausing a few seconds for the doggy to stop, if they stop, fine praise, if they keep knawing on the stones squirt with water. Myself I have found using a can with rocks makes many Yorkies bark.
The dog whisper thing gardengirl77 is talking about, was a large breed dog with OCD.
