I know it's not funny but your post made me chuckle -- I can actually visualize the little "criminal" in "the act". I don't have an answer for you but my Romeo likes to hide bits of cheese and treats in his beds around the house just so that he can "dig" them up later.
If you can, take a video of your baby in the act and post it please.
