Couldn't they just take the crate? they're not going to worry about being gentle with your baby, they'll just be doing what will get them in and out the quickest.
OP I recommend going ahead with an alarm system, it'll give you piece of mind and should keep out most burglars. I'm glad I found an access controlled building, the front office will see anyone coming and going during the day and they don't leave until I get home at night. Plus Rizzo hates strangers so much he'll bark/scream/cry until they let him go.
