I've brushed ZoE and trimmed her ears & hygiene areas, clipped her nails and trimmed her feet myself since the week I first got her. She's never been to a professional groomer and probably never will (my last yorkie never did). I love a full coat and don't care for puppy cuts, etc.
I do think its important to touch them all over, especially their ears, feet, butt, teeth/mouth often from being a young puppy so they are used to being handled. It will make for easier grooming whether its you or someone else doing it.
