Food? or is it something else?. . . Sorry this is a bit long and drawn out. . . My little dog Lu is a yorkie/maltese. She will be two in December but I have only had her since this past April (Easter). She is tiny, just under 3.5 lbs but generally in good health and we are not aware of any allergies or other health concerns either previously or current. When I first got Lu she went on a bit of a hunger strike as she mourned the loss of her former home. They took very good care of her from a Vet or health care standpoint but the food she was eating wasn't really great. It was some cheap grocery store Purina something or other. Anyway, I hadn't planned on changing her food right away as I figured she had enough changes and that could wait until she got settled in. However due to Lu's decision to quit eating after we brought her home we tried to entice her with pretty much everything under the sun. We had samples of all sorts of high quality dog food and she wouldn't consider any of them. We even tried fresh roasted turkey from our supper and that was also a no go. Lu would eat a kibble or two if we held them in our hand and after much coaxing but that was about it. I was weighing her every day to make sure she wasn't withering away and was about to take her to the vet when she decided the food we had out for our other dogs was what she wanted to eat. We feed our other dogs Acana regular adult in the blue bag. I thought it might be too big for her but wasn't going to argue with success! At first I was concerned that a quick change like that would seriously upset her system but there seemed to be no adverse issues at all. Her stool was firm and she was eating well. About three weeks ago I took her to the Vet for a check up and for her shots including rabies and to be microchipped. Up until about a week ago there didn't seem to be any issues with that either. But now every now and again Lu gags and throws up a tiny bit of bile as though her stomach is empty. She doesn’t retch and retch she just gags and throws up a small amount of bile. This doesn't happen often but has happened a few times in the past week or so. Last week she had a gagging bout a couple times in the same evening and then the next day she didn’t seem like she felt entirely well but didn't seem entirely sick just maybe a bit off and then the next day she did seem sick and she wasn't eating or drinking much if anything and her stool was crazy mucousy and sometimes nothing but clear gloppy thick mucous. Sometimes there was a little bit of fresh blood. I read about that and the stuff I read said that it could be worms or some lower intestinal thing and that if it persisted for more than a couple of days to go to the Vet. (Lu was de-wormed a couple of months ago so it shouldn’t be worms I wouldn’t think.) I was watching her very closely and was going to call the Vet the next morning to make an appointment and the next morning everything was fine. Lu's stool was firm again and she was eating and playing like nothing happened. Now today she gagged and threw up a tiny bit of bile again? She hasn't had a bowel movement so I don't know what her stool is like yet but she was running around and playing earlier today. . . What the heck? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what is going on. Has anyone else had something like this occur with their dog? Could this be a stress reaction? I trimmed her nails yesterday and she seems to think she might die every time I trim them and shakes terribly but that still seems a bit unusual since she didn’t get sick after the Vet trip or when we first got her. I’m certainly open to suggestions or thoughts on the matter. |
