When she said "light trim" I thought she was going to lightly trim his whole body. All she ended up doing was shave the hair on his belly and trim his legs/paws. When I went to go pick him up, I she to bring him in 3 weeks from now and they will start working on his face. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't trim any of the hair on his coat, which has gotten pretty long already. She said they typically don't shave the coat until they're 1 year old. This sounds a little hard to believe. If his hair is this shaggy when he's only 4 months, it'll be crazy by the time he's 1 year old.
Can someone offer any advice on this? Is this groomer full of it...can you shave/trim Yorkie coats prior to 1 year? BTW, we won't be showing/breeding him so we want to go with the teddy bear/puppy cut and not the standard AKC-style look. |
I think the groomer did the right thing for a 4 month old. Since yorkies are a breed that has to be groomed for life you want to make sure you ease them into it and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. Unless he was matted I would have done the same thing. Bath, blow dry, brush out, nails, ears, pads, and sanitary, plus neaten his feet if he'd let me. that's overwhelming enough for a puppy. I always recommend puppy owners to bring them in every month even if they don't need a haircut so we can gradually get them used to all the sights, sounds, smells, and routines of grooming. They are much better off this way in the long run.
Did you tell her you were planning on keeping him in a short easy to manage trim instead of full coat? Let her know next time if you didn't. Also, personally with my own dogs, i wouldn't give a 4 month old a haircut yet. Their hair really isn't so bad and they are still in the cute fuzzy puppy stage. I'd wait till maybe 8 months.
