If this is a young pup, losing coat is normal. If an adult, then depending on where the hair loss is, the vet will need to do tests to figure out what is going on. Sometimes certain infections can be diagnosed with just an exam. Usually bloodwork and/or skin scraping and/or skin culture and/or skin biopsy are needed. Allergy testing can be added to that if she has symptoms related to that sort of thing. Really just depends on what the vet thinks it might be. Your general vet will probably be able to figure it out, but if not, then you'd need to go to a dermatologist.
