You are right; most times they go strictly on the so-called value of the dog - purchase price, etc.
Normally, they would not award pain and suffering for the loss of a dog - which the courts consider to be personal property.
Maybe one day that will change - because WE all know that the loss of our precious pups sure can cause lots of pain and suffering.
