I repeat the sentiments of so many others here when I say how terribly sorry I am for your loss.

I think you were wise to have an autopsy done and if you pursue legal action I wish you well in that endeavour. It's not about being vindictive but in holding people accountable for their actions or lack of them. While accidents can happen there is no excuse for negligence and there are too many stories of people who have had dogs injured or die due to negligence. The only way to help protect other people's animals is by holding those responsible, accountable. Again, so sorry for your loss. It breaks my heart.
