I would not shave a 4-month old (unless this is a larger Yorkie), but I would not wait until the pup is a year old if I wanted to keep him in a puppy cut.
I think I would look for a different groomer, especially if she charged you full price for this "light trim."
How about learning to groom at home? Lots of people here do it.
Whatever you decide, be very specific and bring pictures with you to the groomer. If you say shave, they will shave to the skin. Are you sure that is what you want?
