Yes, first, I'd rule out any medical problem.
Second, the moment I let Jackson sleep in my bed through the night, was the night he began sleeping through the night. lol. Granted, he was young when we started, and he would still wake up really early (he was only, like, 4 months old).
Jackson just knows not to wake me up unless necessary, lol. I've always snapped my fingers and said "lay back down" and he will. Not in a mean way (every one, I think, knows that Jax and I have a great relationship, I am not mean to him) and he knows not to mess with my sleep schedule, LOL. Of course if he really has to go, I can usually tell, or he "tells" me in his own way.... but yeah, I guess I lay the law down when it comes to my sleep!!
I puppysat for a 7 month old a few weeks back and the owner was like "Wow whatever you did- Toby now lets me sleep in on the weekends!" Ha Ha! I don't even really do anything, I guess the dogs just know I need my sleep, lmao.
