It is usually with business types. I'm fortunate in that my dog's breeder does grooming at home so she ONLY goes to her. Once I took her to a business place bc her breeder didn't have any openings available in the timeframe I needed and it was only to a face trim so I thought she'd be ok, yeah she came back sick from treats they fed her. Obviously it's NOTHING compared to the OP's heartbreak, but this just goes to show that we can't be too trusting of who we leave our babies with. I'm sure there are tons of reputable business groomers, but you just have to be VERY careful.
