I've heard some on here claim they have trained their dog to do both successfully, but most of those I know personally that claim that, have dogs that have alot of 'accidents'. I only have one friend that successfully trains her larger, older, dog to do both, and the potty pad is right by the door to the outside, and he uses it if he's desperate to go when they aren't home.
I agree with you about the confusion part. My boys are 100% trained to do both indoor and outdoors, zero accidents, but they have access to the pad 24 hours a day in our home. I can move the pad anywhere and they will go to it, but I doubt I could take it away certain times of day.

They know if we go to another house or a store, it is not okay to potty indoors. Consistency is key.
